About IST
Industrial Steel Treating began operations in 1943 in Jackson, Michigan. Initially we served the tool and die industry in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana. IST is now in the third generation of Levy family ownership. Today, Tim and Tom Levy run the operations at Industrial Steel Treating and have been with the company for more than 40 years each. Jordan Levy, a fourth generation Levy at IST, serves as Customer Service Manager.
From humble beginnings in 1943 to today, IST has grown to be one of the largest and most-modern commercial heat-treating companies in North America. Our Industrial Steel Treating campus is now two across-the-street buildings covering 350,000 square feet. Each building houses production, testing, laboratory, and warehouse spaces. To best serve our customers we have 13 truck bays split between the two buildings with 24-hour shipping-and-receiving and a fleet of late-model trucks and trailers. Capacity, quality and logistics help ensure our customers get the quick turnaround they have come to expect. Most production runs are turned in 7 days, with rush orders able to get turned in 24 hours or less.
IST obtained QS-9000 registration in 1996 and currently is ISO 9001:2015 QMS certified. We service steel alloy parts manufacturers in a wide variety of industries. Our commitment to quality and service sets us apart from other metal processors. We have a loyal and highly trained employee family. We value our long-term customer relationships, some who go back all the way to those humble beginnings decades ago.

History
Industrial Steel Treating began in a small building on the south side of Jackson, Michigan in 1943. Originally the company serviced the tool and die industry in the local area during World War II. In 1947, William Levy joined the company and started the 4 generation legacy of the Levy family ownership of IST. About that same time, IST moved into our current building, which has since grown to a 350,000 square foot campus of production and warehouse space. As Industrial Steel grew in size, so did the production capacity of our heat treating furnaces. The automotive industry in Michigan and the surrounding area was a perfect fit since the industry’s need for heat treated steel parts and fasteners aligned with IST’s capabilities. Almost every car on the road today has parts that were heat treated at IST! Along with the automotive industry, we service the heavy truck, off road, construction, and military markets too.
In 2017, Industrial Steel purchased a long-time partner, Rapids Tumble Finish, when the owner was looking to retire. RTF provided a perfect addition to the IST suite of services to tighten the supply chain for our customers. Rapids Tumble Finish provides a vibratory finishing, shot blasting and zinc phosphate coatings.
Over the last 80 years of business, the furnaces and technology used to heat treat steel have changed dramatically. We can heat millions of steel parts per day compared to the small volume runs that comprised our book of business. But some things are the same, like our commitment to the quality of our service and our commitment to our customers.
